Information<\/h3>\n

The Balvenie DoubleWood is the base offerning from Balvenie. \u00a0It is matured mainly in “Whisky Oak” (which is not a very common name but is most likely American Oak bourbon barrels) and finished for three months in Sherry casks.<\/p>\n

You’ll find a lot of people who love Balvenie DoubleWood. \u00a0I am not one of them.<\/p>\n

Nose<\/h3>\n

Salty, almost like soy sauce. \u00a0Dried blueberries, sour cherries. \u00a0A slight sherry note that fades as the whisky opens up. \u00a0A hint of cocoa. \u00a0Bourbon vanilla, slight soapiness, and wet newspaper.<\/p>\n

Smells younger than 12 years to me, like it has been aged in less active refill casks.<\/p>\n

Palate<\/h3>\n

Salty, again. \u00a0Moderate pepper, toffee. \u00a0Tastes young. \u00a0Sherry at first, but disappears with water. \u00a0Surprisingly dry for a sherry-finished whisky.<\/p>\n

Finish<\/h3>\n

pepper and toffee. \u00a0Nicely warm. \u00a0Better with a bit of water, which takes the edge off.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h3>\n

If you’re looking for a good example of a poorly finished whisky, this is it. \u00a0They should have called this SingleWood and packaged it as such. \u00a0The Sherry-oak finish is just not very good, and it fades quickly, leaving behind a young-tasting 12 year whisky. \u00a0I consider Glenmorangie Lasanta to be a better Sherry-finished whisky – Glenmorangie’s spirit seems to take better to finishing.<\/p>\n

There are better drams for the price, and if you just add another $10 or $15, you can get something great.<\/p>\n
